A letter to my son

To my son,

You were born into a much different world than when you were conceived. Yes, in 9 months our lives and soon to be yours; were going to drastically change. You were born in quarantine; while the world was experiencing a pandemic... Covid-19. No one was allowed to come see us in the hospital. Everyone had to wear masks. Stores, salons, and restaurants closed for almost two months. I’m sure you’ll learn about this or even hear of your family talk about it for most of your life.
This is also a time when racism and hate crimes seem to be at an all time high. Just remember son, we are one. Our skin color, ethnic diversity, religion, or even who we choose to love should never cause division or hate between you and someone else.
Since the day you were born I’ve thought about writing this for you. (Currently we are laying in bed, you on my chest and it’s 3 am.) My heart is broken, scared, terrified and very uncertain on how to raise you in such a broken world. But son, I know that your generation is born stronger; with more resilience, love, and a greater will to survive and change the world for better. I know I have the strength, knowledge and love within my heart to raise you right. And when I say that, it means so many different things. Raise you to have respect for others, but also knowing you have to stand up for yourself and others, even if it’s the unpopular thing to do; stand up for what is right, no matter what. Our lives are so controlled by social media and negativity; that standing out and having opinions is looked down upon.
Every day might be a fight. A fight for bringing back love and kindness; something that is rapidly disappearing in society. Due to the media, our world is ran by fear and hate. You have to be the change. Your generation will change our world for good. Teaching love, kindness, acceptance and integrity. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” —-MLK
